Standing outside of the Musee d’Orsay, sketching gave me a chance to both warm my fingers and try to understand the architecture. I can’t get enough of those chimneys! The Musee is an old train station and has a lovely sense of space and light. It houses impressionist paintings and… and I don’t do justice to the rest of the exhibits because it’s the impressionism I make a bee-line for.
These buildings are across the street from the museum and they look like they are crowdedly sprouting out of a flower pot, don’t they? I think that’s what happens when I draw from the roofline down, instead of thinking about the entire composition at once as a whole. I started with the roof-line because of my chimney-love and was worried the line would move faster than my ability to draw the buildings.
